Four ocean dives are required for PADI Open Water Certification. Students must register in advance for these dates. If you need to rent equipment for these dives, you will need to come in to the store and be fitted. Please do this in advance so we can guarantee that we will have equipment for your ocean dive weekend.
Instruction: Includes instruction for the entire weekend and certification card fees.
Refresher Policy: If you are planning to do your check out dives with us here in New England and it has been longer than 3 months since your pool sessions, we require that you take an Open Water Skills Refresher prior to doing your check out dives. We will schedule those as needed and the cost is $100.
Student Rental Rate: (Includes 2 tanks, regulator, BC, wetsuit, hood, & weight belt.) Students must supply mask, snorkel, fins, boots, & gloves. Student discount is 15% off our regular rental rate (estimated $97.75). Students may pick up their equipment either Thursday or Friday and return it after the dives on Sunday. Students can wash their equipment at the store. MASS Diving will take a digital picture of you for your certification card.
Meeting Places and Times - All four ocean training dives will be conducted in the Gloucester and Rockport area.
Saturday and Sunday Shore Dives: 6am at the Burger King, Rt. 128 North - Just past Exit 19 in Beverly. Our first choice of destinations is Back Beach in Rockport. Students should arrive back at the store early afternoon. You will need 2 tanks each day. Tanks can be refilled at the store at no charge on Saturday.
Note: There is limited metered parking at Back Beach. Please carpool as much as possible. Bring lots of quarters to feed the meters.
All SCUBA GEAR: 2 tanks per day, weights, regulator, B.C., wetsuit, hood, boots, gloves, mask, snorkel, fins, and compass.
* Please make sure your weight belt is properly adjusted before Saturday morning.
* Log book and pen
* Food and drinks (lots of liquid to prevent dry mouth & dehydration)
* Tarp or beach blanket to lay gear on and a towel for yourself
* Extra warm dry clothes - it's always cooler on the coast. Better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them. Also, foul weather gear if it looks like rain.
* Plan proper sun protection
* Wear bathing suit under clothes as there may be no changing rooms. (For Spring cooler months and late Fall only)
* Bring a roll of quarters for the parking meters at Front Beach and Back Beach or $10 for Stage Fort Park our alternative shore site.
* A thermos or two of hot (but not boiling) water to pour in your suit before dive two. (Applies to spring and late fall dives only.)
* A smile and lots of enthusiasm !!!
Consider taking the PADI Dry Suit Course along with your Open Water Course and do all your open water training dives in a dry suit. Click here for more information.
